blinkx Announces 28 New Media Partnerships to Serve Niche Audiences
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - August 28, 2007 - blinkx, the world’s largest video search engine, today announced 28 new partnerships with special interest, or “Long Tail,” media companies. Through these agreements, blinkx has expanded its index of more than 14 million hours of searchable video content into new genres and categories, and extended its leadership in delivering the most diverse material and intuitive viewing experience on the Web.
Broadband penetration and advances in video compression have driven the proliferation of multimedia content on the Web and resulted in the mainstream consumption of online video. As technical progress has dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for Internet publishing, more independent producers are distributing their video content online, and achieving great success among smaller, but dedicated, audiences.
In addition to indexing mainstream media, blinkx is committed to making it easier to locate this niche video content on the Web.
“The democratization of media is one of the most exciting possibilities of the Web - the idea that people with common interests can build a community, regardless of their physical location,” said Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CEO, blinkx. “blinkx is helping to deliver on that promise by indexing the broadest variety of video content on the Web today, and making it easier for everyone - from bikers to brides-to-be - to find material that appeals to their specific interests.”
Among the new partnerships signed are Cycling TV and Wedding TV, two broadband television channels with specialized offerings on the Web. Dedicated to serving the world’s cycling community, Cycling TV offers live feeds of cycle races around the world, including behind-the-scenes coverage of the Tour de France. Wedding TV has something for every stage of the romantic relationship: from personal wedding videos to reality shows and documentaries, the site also offers expert advice on planning the perfect wedding and follows couples as they prepare to tie the knot.
blinkx also recently signed an agreement with Eye Music Network, a Web site featuring more than 3,500 hours of the best of the best music videos from pop, rock, reggae and more. Music fans can also create their own music video channels and share them with friends. In addition, blinkx has teamed up with GeoBeats, a producer of professional video travel guides, to give travel enthusiasts a sense of a destination’s local flavor and to help them plan their next memorable adventure.
blinkx (London AIM: BLNX) is the world’s most comprehensive video search engine. Today, blinkx has indexed more than 14,000,000 hours of audio, video, viral and TV content, and made it fully searchable and available on demand. blinkx’s founders set out to solve a significant challenge - as TV and user-generated content on the Web explode, keyword-based search technologies only scratch the surface. blinkx’s patented search technologies listen to - and even see - the Web, helping users enjoy a breadth and accuracy of search results not available elsewhere. In addition, blinkx powers the video search for many of the world’s most frequented sites. blinkx is based in San Francisco and London. More information is available at www.blinkx.com.
