blinkx Ready to Revolutionise Video Searches

An internet search engine has found a way for moving thumbnails to show the files that pop up during searches.

blinkx, which specialises in audio and visual content, has worked with a Cambridge University team to come up with the new technology.

It has been designed to help users find the online videos they really want to watch - and, from bases in both Britain and the US, it could change the way we search for material on the web.

Thanks to investment of more than $150 million (£96 million), blinkx manages to process more than 7 million requests a day.

It is currently in negotiations with manufacturers to have the company icon installed in internet TVs.

blinkx founder Suranga Chandratillake said: “Online video will be the replacement for TV one day.

“Even if you are watching a TV screen, increasingly the content will be from the internet.

“Connectivity is not currently such a big feature in TV sets, but that will change pretty soon,” the 34-year-old computer science graduate added.

“Viewers around the world will be able to choose what they want to watch from millions of different sources.”

With offices in both Cambridge and San Francisco, blinkx also specialises in online advertising.

The search engine has tools to find the latest viral videos and TV shows online, and recently acquired advertising and marketing companies Burst Media and PVMG, in multi-million-pound deals.

Chandratillake said: “The Cambridge connection allows us to keep ahead of rivals in terms of technology and so the activities of the company are split between the US and UK.”
